Coeliac disease mainly affects the part of your gut called the small intestine. It’s a permanent intestinal reaction to gluten (a protein in barley, wheat, rye and oats). Coeliac disease can develop at any stage in life. It has a strong genetic tendency, so often runs in families. A strict gluten free diet is the only effective treatment for people with confirmed coeliac disease. Learn more about coeliac disease.

There are a variety of apps to support people with coeliac disease. They can help you:

  • learn about your condition including the symptoms of coeliac disease and how to live gluten free
  • keep track of the foods you're eating and your symptoms to share with your healthcare provider and to help you make safer food choices
  • find gluten-free recipes and meal planning ideas
  • find gluten-free restaurants, bakeries, and stores to make it easier to dine out or find safe options when traveling.

Before choosing an app, think about how it will benefit you and what you want it to be able to do.

  • An app will only be helpful if you use it, so it needs to be something you like using and find easy to use.
  • If you find the app difficult to use, or you don't like the imagery or look of it, or the language it uses, you may want to find another one that suits you better.
  • For more guidance on how to choose health apps, see how to choose a health app.
  • It's important to remember that apps don’t replace professional help or your doctor’s advice.
