How to get the app

The Foot Function app is helpful if you wish to improve your foot function. You could have a particular foot problem (eg, plantar fasciitis), or you may not currently have pain, but you wish to improve your foot function, including stability, balance and flexibility. The app has a few helpful features including:

  • Education on helpful principles for foot management (these are well packaged into short videos + info) that are easy to access and take on.
  • A range of ‘challenges’ that you can participate in and track your progress. You can unlock these one at a time, which shows the progress you make.
  • A community for social engagement.
  • Further learning on particular topics or pathologies, which you can access at a cost. (Please note, this content hasn’t been reviewed as part of this app review).

PROS CONS

✔ Excellent educational information packaged in small chunks which make it quite manageable to take in.

✔ Very helpful ‘get-inspired’ section which has solid foot health education, as well as general health information, especially a breathing section which is very good.

✔ Helpful challenges as a way of tracking progress.

Cost of 'courses' section. At the start of the app you complete a questionnaire to work out which courses would be relevant to you. The actual courses are quite indepth (eg, the first one recommended to me was 10 chapters, with 63 exercises) but they have a significant cost (eg, $88 New Zealand Dollars). This was not reviewed as part of the app.

Comments: Overall, this is a helpful app with well-packaged education related to foot function and foot health.
It's likely to be most helpful for users with healthy feet, or with minor pathologies that wish to take independent control for improving their foot function.
There's an extensive ‘courses’ section which contains further learning. This was not reviewed as part of this app, due to the high cost of this section.

Safety concerns: I would recommend this app for users with no current foot pathology, or for users with minor pathology. There are some challenges and exercises that would be better suited for individuals without current injury (and these users would be better to seek the advice of a doctor, podiatrist or physiotherapist before engaging in exercise programmes or challenges).
New Zealand relevance: Yes. Generally this app is suitable for Aotearoa New Zealand users, with the advice given being consistent with what you would expect from a New Zealand physiotherapist or podiatrist. However, the “Near Me’ section, which finds local health professionals and footwear stockists, contains no New Zealand suppliers and wouldn’t be applicable for a New Zealand user.
