Bactroban® is an ointment that contains an antibiotic called mupirocin.
It’s used to treat small areas of infected skin, including mild school sores (impetigo). It works by killing germs (bacteria) on the skin.
Bactroban is usually only prescribed when other medicines aren’t suitable or haven’t worked. Using Bactroban too much can cause resistance to the antibiotic.
If bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, when you next need an antibiotic they may no longer work to treat your infection. Read more about antibiotic resistance.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, Bactroban is available on a prescription written by a prescriber.
Always use Bactroban exactly as your healthcare provider has told you. The pharmacy label will tell you how much to use, how often to use it and any special instructions.
- The usual dose is to apply a small amount to the affected area 3 times a day.
- Bactroban is usually used for up to 10 days. Your healthcare provider will tell you how long to use it.
- If your skin doesn’t improve within a few days, or gets worse, contact your healthcare provider.
- If you forget to apply a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. Don’t apply extra ointment to make up for a missed dose.
- Wash your hands before and after using the ointment.
- Clean and dry the affected area.
- Apply a thin layer of ointment.
- If your healthcare provider advised you to, cover the area with a clean dressing.
Using antibiotics when they aren’t needed can make bacteria resistant. Only use Bactroban for the infection it was prescribed for.
Like all medicines, Bactroban can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. If you're concerned about any symptoms you think might be related to your medicine, talk to your healthcare provider. The following information offers some guidance but doesn't include all possible side effects.
Common side effects
Tell your healthcare provider if these side effects bother you.
- Mild itching, burning or stinging where you have applied the ointment.
Phone 111 for an ambulance or go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) clinic if these occur
- signs of an allergic reaction such as itchy skin, and rash, swollen lips or tongue, problems breathing, like a tight chest or shortness of breath.
Read more about medicines and side effects and reporting a reaction you think might be a side effect.
