Calcium is a naturally occurring substance that is important for healthy, strong bones. You body usually gets enough calcium from what you eat. Sometimes you may need more calcium than normal, eg, in childhood and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Also, as you get older your body may not absorb as much calcium as it used to.
