How to access the tool

DermDiag is an online tool developed by DermNet to help you understand your skin condition. It is intended for educational purposes and doesn't provide medical advice.

By answering a series of questions, and with images to help you along, you are shown a selection of common skin conditions with the characteristics you have chosen.  Although the tool doesn't provide clinical guidance, it helps you to talk to your doctor and to learn more about your skin condition.

Comments: This app is an interactive version of the textbook Differential Diagnosis in Dermatology by Dr Ashton and colleagues. Modifications have been made to the algorithms to better serve the medium. This is an exceptionally useful tool for patients and clinicians alike. It is well known that “googling” your skin rash does not tend to give you the correct diagnosis. This high quality app will help reduce diagnostic error in dermatology. For most users I see no reason to use paid tools like virtualdx over this high quality free tool with the associated extensive database of conditions that DermNet provides.
Safety concerns: None – there are appropriate warnings.
New Zealand relevance: Relevant to New Zealanders. Developed by DermNet NZ.
