How to get the app |
Stone MD is for people with kidney stones who may benefit from changes to their diet. To use the app, users should know details about their stone, such as its type, makeup, and location, as well as other health information. The app then estimates their risk of having another kidney stone in 2, 5, and 10 years and provides dietary recommendations to help people reduce this risk.
- Users can get tips on how to lower their chances of getting more kidney stones through guidance on daily water intake and diet.
- Users can set reminders to drink water and log what they eat by choosing from a food list. The app then calculates their daily intake of calcium, protein, and calories. This information can be turned into graphs to help track progress over time. Users can also use a diary feature to track urinary pH levels.
- The app also provides educational content on the surgical management of kidney stones with YouTube videos to help patients better understand the procedures.
- For users with ureteral stents, the app offers a place to record details like the stent’s location, insertion date, planned removal date, doctor contact info, and any additional notes.

Comments: Overall Stone MD is a useful app that provides an individual’s risk of recurrent kidney stones across a 10-year period, with added recommendations to water and food intake to help reduce the risk. The risk is based off the clinically validated ROKS nomogram. Some users may find using this app challenging however as it contains medical jargon throughout, and relies on users knowing the type, location, and composition of their kidney stone. The educational content on surgical options is useful. Some parts of the app are limited to Russian language only, which may restrict some users from the full benefit of using the app.
Safety concerns: Relatively safe app when used in conjunction with medical advice from the patient’s healthcare professional.
The information in this app should not replace medical advice.
This app relies on patients knowing details about their kidney stones to calculate the risk of recurrence. The results may not be reliable if the patient does not know the type, location, and composition of their kidney stone.
New Zealand relevance: Yes (mostly)
Concerns: Input of food can be challenging as this section is in Russian language.
