How to get the app |
OCD Anxiety, Mood & Sleep app uses a series of card sort games designed to educate users about anxiety and other mental health concerns, including obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Each game uses repetition and reward for correct responses, with the aim of modifying beliefs about the concern in question. As suggested by the app’s title, the primary mental health concern addressed by the app is obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) although there is little evidence that use of the app will successfully treat clinically significant OCD symptoms.
The app allows users to select modules relevant to their needs. Modules available in the app include generalised anxiety, mood, social anxiety, health anxiety, perfectionism and self esteem. There is also a series of modules that address different thinking patterns in obsessive compulsive disorder including fear of contamination, harm to others, aggression, sexual orientation and “not just right” feelings. The app also contains modules on body image and disordered eating, trauma and grief and medical issues such as tinnitus, chronic pain, endometriosis and migraine.

PROS | CONS |
---|---|
✔ Visually attractive. ✔ All written material is verbalised. ✔ Enjoyable card sort game format. ✔ Users will learn about the role of thoughts and anxiety. |
✘ Repetitive games. ✘ Uses positive affirmations rather than true CBT techniques. ✘ Games require true/false responses rather than requiring users to develop own helpful responses to unhelpful thinking patterns or learn strategies to challenge unhelpful thoughts. ✘ No behavioural strategies taught eg to address compulsive behaviours common in OCD. |

Comments: Although this app is somewhat enjoyable to engage with, it is unlikely to help users towards meaningful change due to its lack of inclusion of behavioural aspects of treatment. Because behavioural and emotional avoidance is a key maintaining factor in anxiety disorders, including OCD, behavioural change is necessary to overcome most conditions. Secondly, the format of each game only requires the user to select “correct” ways of thinking, over and over. This oversimplifies the process of cognitive modification used in CBT to treat anxiety disorders to the point where I felt it was simply telling me what to think. The app has been the subject of a number of scientific studies about relationships, body dissatisfaction and perfectionism, all with positive impact, although, it should be noted that none of these studies used clinical samples and some declared conflicts of interest.
Safety concerns: Emergency resources are not NZ based. This app is not an alternative to evidence based treatment for OCD.
New Zealand relevance: Yes
Concerns: Emergency resources are not NZ based. AI Verbal descriptions use American accent.
