How to get the app |
Epipal is a seizure detection app that offers features such as real-time alerts, medication tracking, and collaborative journaling to support both individuals with epilepsy and their caregivers.
- Epipal utilises motion sensors in smartphones and smartwatches to detect tonic-clonic seizures and certain types of falls. When a potential seizure is detected, the app triggers an alarm, and if not disarmed within a preset time, it sends an alert to designated emergency contacts.
- Epipal allows you to maintain a shared epilepsy journal where family members and caregivers can log seizures, auras, triggers, and side effects.
- The app provides shared medication reminders, enabling family members to monitor and log medication adherence.
- Epipal includes an emergency button that, with two simple taps, allows the you to send an alert to your entire Epipal family circle.
- The app offers data analytics to help you identify patterns and trends in seizure activity, medication efficacy, and other relevant metrics.

Comments: The Epipal app is a subscription-based tool designed for individuals with epilepsy and their caregivers, offering features like seizure detection, emergency alerts, medication tracking and insight analysis. The seizure detection and automatic emergency alerts notifies emergency contacts when a tonic-clonic seizure is detected via smartphone. (Note: seizure detection is currently available only on Apple Watch at the time of review.). The collaborative seizure logging feature allows you to log seizures, triggers, and symptoms across different phases (beginning, middle, recovery). Family members or caregivers can also contribute to the journal. In addition, the manual emergency alert button allows you to quickly notify your Epipal family circle in urgent situations. However, you should ensure proper setup and not rely solely on the app for protection, as it's not a substitute for professional medical supervision or emergency response.
Safety concerns: Missed seizure alerts: these may occur if seizure detection settings are not properly configured, emergency contacts are incorrect, or the app is not paired with a compatible smartphone or smartwatch. Notification failures: Alerts or reminders may not work if the app lacks necessary permissions, the device battery dies, the app is closed or disabled in the background, or if there's no internet access for sending alerts. Inconsistent data logging: Variability in how users or caregivers log seizures, symptoms, or medications can lead to incomplete or unreliable data, affecting insight analysis.
New Zealand relevance: Yes, the app is relevant to New Zealand users.
