How to get the app |
The Apart of Me app is a therapeutic game designed to support young people who have experienced grief, taking them on a journey of healing through a magical and immersive world.
Before entering, there's a disclaimer noting the app collects anonymous data which may be shared for research and learning purposes, asking for consent. You can use the app regardless of your answer.
You're then welcomed on to a magical island by a guide, who has also experienced death, which has made their life feel dark, scary and confusing. The guide then asks you to enter your name, either real or made up, and age.
You can then navigate your character around the magical world using the touch screen. A backpack icon features on the screen which you can tap at any time to reveal a map of the island. There are interactive features that light up and that you can tap on, as well as the following features based on the underlying themes of acceptance, peace, wisdom and connection.
- The Cave – here you can listen to others experiences; features a new story each time you leave the game and return to the cave.
- The Rockpool – a calming breathing exercise.
- The Guides Hut – links to helpful resources and information.
- Quests – a guide to completing exercises in the real world.
- Fireflies – catching and releasing fireflies to learn about different emotions.
You can go at your own pace, leaving and returning to the game at anytime.

Comments: This app is a beautifully designed game, transporting you to a magical world where you can find a sense of safety, calm and connection. Created by young people who have experienced grief and experts in child psychology, it's easy to navigate, and the interactive nature enhances engagement for the target audience.
The language, images, sounds and friendly characters with their own personal stories all serve to create a welcoming and peaceful environment, where you can go at your own pace to explore and understand your emotions and connect with others through their shared experiences. Quests encourage you to leave the game to complete exercises in the real world as well as connect with others.
Whilst this app has been designed for children and teens, it may also appeal to an older audience who like games and fantasy. It has a nice amount of content, without feeling overwhelming. The recordings of children and teens sharing personal stories in their own voices is a powerful feature.
The app has won a number of awards and is a wonderful tool to help young people heal.
Safety concerns: None.
New Zealand relevance: Yes, however, as this is UK-designed app, the resources provided are not NZ-based.
