How to get the app

The uv2day app helps users to know when to take more care in the sun by providing information about the UV index during the day at a location of choice. The app provides information on the UV index (UVI) forecasts throughout the day at your specified location. You can also access information on other selected locations within New Zealand, Australia, South Pacific and Antarctic regions. The app is useful for planning outdoor activities throughout the year and has a specific New Zealand ski region section. It alerts you when the UVI is 3 or above and gives corresponding information on the exposure period within which skin damage can occur. It prompts you to avoid exposure or use skin protection (slip, slop, slap and wrap(external link)). Data in the app is provided by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric). For a more detailed description of the app, see Google Play(external link) or iTunes(external link) and for a detailed review, see reviews below.

PROS CONS

Includes behavioural messages.

Provides education on UV index in a graph format – easy to understand.

Has local region and town-specific info.

A possible improvement is more detail on the types of sun protection required for the different UVI readings. For example, how often to apply sunscreen, what strength SPF is recommended or tips on how to cover up.

Comments: Very basic app. Not very aesthetically pleasing but it gets the job done in regards to having up to date UVI readings. The explanation about UVI is very good and easy to understand.  Useful for any Kiwi planning on being outdoors this summer. Great that it has local region and town-specific info.
The fact that it doesn’t have temperature is a big plus as it stops people thinking that the temperature affects the intensity/burn factor. It could be a cool day but the UVI could still indicate a need for sun protection so it is good in this aspect. This app is very useful in the Community Pharmacy setting. It would be a good value-add conversation to have with people coming in and buying sunscreen
Safety concerns: None. As the info comes directly from NIWA it is pretty reliable.
New Zealand relevance: Very relevant
