What is a paediatric centiles calculator?

Paediatric centiles (short for percentiles) are used to track growth and development in children, such as their height, weight, or BMI (body mass index), compared to other children of the same age and sex. They help healthcare providers and parents see if a child is growing in a healthy and expected way. You have probably seen them in the growth charts provided in your child's Well Child Tamariki Ora My Health Book.

Note: The calculator may not be suitable for babies born before 37 weeks and children with certain health conditions, such as some endocrine or genetic conditions.

Centiles and growth charts are guides only

  • They are based on data collected from large population studies and represent the typical range of measurements for a specific group.
  • They are divided into segments called centiles, which indicate how a child compares to others of the same age and gender.
  • For example, a baby on the 85th centile for weight is heavier than 85% of their peers, but lighter than the remaining 15%. While babies naturally vary in size, most fall between the 3rd and 97th centiles for measurements such as weight, length, and head circumference.
  • Your healthcare provider can track your child’s growth from one measure to the next and also compared to the reference. This makes it easier to identify a problem when it occurs and take early action.

Note: This calculator was developed specifically for Healthify. It doesn't collect or record any personal data, and all calculations are done on your own computer, not on our servers.
