  • There is some benefit for those users wishing to learn some principles and exercises they can do to help prevent falls.

LPT Falls Prevention app By Physitrack PLC

Features

The app does have an option of a user getting a personalised exercise programme, specific to those residents of Leicestershire. This wasn’t able to be viewed part of the app, but this seems to be linked to Physitrack, a well-established exercise prescription software in the physiotherapy community.

How to get the app

This app is designed to reduce the risk of falls. It has specifically been designed by the Leicestershire Partnership to run alongside the in person supports as part of the falls prevention service. For those users in that region, the app links them in with a particular class and allows them to access a personalised exercise programme.

For those users out of Leicestershire, the app has a more limited use. Users will be able to access a video that provides high quality advice and exercises related to reducing the risk of falls. Users can get information, such as:

  • Education tips around safe walking and what to do if you have a fall (including demonstration on how to get up from a fall).
  • Exercises aimed at reducing risk of falls. This comprises 8 exercises, using a combination of strength and balance. All exercises have good video demonstration on how to do this properly.

For the complete app description, go to the app website(external link), Google Play(external link), App Store(external link) or, for a more detailed review, see reviews below.

PROS CONS

The video that is available through NZ has high-quality balance advice. Education is accurate, and the exercises have been well chosen, and would be consistent to what would be prescribed in New Zealand, seeing a physiotherapist who may have prescribed an Otago Falls Prevention type programme.

The app is very limited for those users out of Leicestershire. Although there is some good information on here, it is likely that the falls prevention information could be found through other avenues, without having to download the app.

Comments: This app is a well-designed and helpful app- for the people of Leicestershire. For that population, the app is effective and will accompany face-to-face supports well. For users in NZ, the app is limited in its effectiveness. There is a ten-minute video that gives some sound advice, which will provide some benefit for users wanting to prevent falls.
Safety concerns: Safety concerns are well addressed in this app. There are good safety precautions around the use of rails/bench for support. The exercises are pitched at an appropriate level for people who are at raised risk of falls.
New Zealand relevance: No.
Concerns: There are several sections of the app that are not relevant to a NZ audience- such as the personalised exercise programme (for UK users only) and the LPT Falls Service. Some of the advice in the ‘advice and recommendations’ section is relevant, but some of this is not necessarily true in a New Zealand context, such as advertising free eye checks for over 65s. There is a 10-minute video that can be viewed from NZ, and gives some relevant information. However, this is the one relevant section of the app.
