Knee Pain Relief Yoga Therapy app
Knee Pain Relief Yoga Therapy app
- An app for people with yoga experience who don't have a knee injury but are looking for a structured lower limb strengthening yoga routine.
- Read a review by Healthify.
The Knee Pain Relief Yoga Therapy app contains a range of exercise programmes, designed to increase strength and address knee pain. The app itself advertises itself as “’home-based therapy to get permanent relief from long-term chronic knee pain to avoid surgery”’.
- The app starts with questions to create a personalised plan. This includes simple questions on gender, age, weight, height and diet (vegetarian/ non-vegetarian).
- The app then allows you to access different exercise programmes.
- There are 2 included in the free version; ‘’Knee pain yoga”’ and ‘’yoga for strong legs’’. Each programme has a list of exercises. Each exercise includes a description, and a video showing the video. The exercises are based around yoga therapy.

PROS | CONS |
---|---|
✔ Easy to follow programme of yoga poses – videos and descriptions are easy to follow. |
✘ Exercises are not at an appropriate level for most users. ✘ I do not believe the app would be safe to use for chronic knee pain sufferers, especially if they don't have full range of motion. ✘ Cost of the premium plans may be a barrier for some users. |

Comments: This app has good potential for utilising yoga poses for strengthening lower limbs. However, this would only be appropriate for users with a background in yoga, and who have full range of motion in the knee. I would not recommend this app to users with osteoarthritis, chronic knee pain or recent knee injury, due to the high level of demand of the exercises.
Safety concerns: Yes. I don't see any safety warnings with exercises, eg, consulting a medical professional before exercising, not working through pain, or instructions to make exercises easier if they are causing pain.
The level of exercises can be appropriate for users with high levels of flexibility and experience with yoga, but I would be very hesitant to recommend the app to the intended population of osteoarthritis and chronic knee sufferers, due to the high demands for functional range of motion involved in the exercises. Some screenshots are displayed below reflecting the high demands of the exercises in the ‘’Knee pain yoga programme’’. Additionally, some of the claims on the exercises are unsubstantiated and not accurate. For example, one of the stretching exercises below claiming to ‘’cure arthritis’’, which is completely untrue.
New Zealand relevance: The app can be relevant to NZ users. However, I would recommend that if you are suffering from knee pain, that this is not the best app to be using. Refer instead to a medical or health professional, or discover one of the other apps through Healthify which will be more appropriate.
