Most GPs have a minimum of 11 years training before working as an independent GP. They must also be registered with the Medical Council of NZ(external link) to work in Aotearoa New Zealand.
New Zealand trained GPs have a 6 year medical degree, then work in a hospital for at least 2 years. They may then do another 3 years specialist training in general practice through the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. If your GP has completed this training they are called a Fellow and have FRNZGP written after their name. They may write their job title as Specialist General Practitioner. MRNZCGP (member) means they are currently doing this training.
Many GPs also have experience in other specialities. Some GPs have done extra training in an area of special interest, for example they may do vasectomies or run menopause clinics.
