How to get the app

The Braintrack app developed by Dementia Australia allows you to monitor and track your brain health and cognitive function over time. It can help you pick up early changes in your cognitive health.

  • The app begins with a check in quiz that can help identify modifiable risk and lifestyle factors that may increase the chances of developing dementia later in life.
  • It provides helpful strategies and information on how to reduce and manage risk factors and adopt a brain healthy lifestyle.
  • You can then complete a series of games based on a travel theme, starting in the first country, Australia. Every 30 days, you can travel to a new country to complete the games that each focus on different areas of cognitive function.
  • Information is also provided on what cognitive domain is being targeted by each game.
  • At the end of the final game, you can see your progress, presented as a percentage score, and can download your results and track changes over time.
  • The results can also be shared with a healthcare provider and is a way of starting a conversation regarding any concerns.
  • There's also a section ‘Brain Health Resources’ which includes topics on the following topics:
    • brain Health tips and strategies
    • what do to with your results, and
    • how to contact Dementia Australia.
  • Note: The app is not a diagnostic tool and doesn't replace a formal cognitive assessment.

PROS CONS

✔ Engaging and fun to use.

✔ Appealing graphics, language and theme.

✔ Progress can be tracked over time and results downloaded and shared with a healthcare provider.

✘ As this is an Australia app, links to resources are Australia based.

✘ Requires a level of literacy.

The app is available for Android and Apple devices so it does require users to have a mobile phone and a degree of proficiency using it.

✘ A user may feel anxious using the app if they have concerns about their cognitive function, and then find waiting another month to complete the next series of games a long time. It's recommended if somebody is concerned about their brain health, they don't delay discussing with their healthcare provider.

Comments: Developed by Dementia Australia, Braintrack is an exciting and innovative free app designed to help people maintain brain health and track changes in cognitive function over time. It contains helpful strategies and tips relating to healthy ageing, and a series of fun games based on a travel narrative that assess different areas of cognitive function.

The travel theme is engaging, and users can look forward to travelling to their next destination each month. It's a mobile app and therefore requires users to have a mobile phone, and degree of proficiency using it. Using the app for the first time may be more challenging for those not as adept with this technology, and they may benefit from some initial assistance in navigating.

Overall, this app is a great self monitoring tool designed to facilitate early intervention as we know this supports better outcomes for individuals. Users can download and share results with their GP to facilitate a starting conversation regarding their brain health in proactive and informed way. Please note, the app is not a diagnostic tool and does not replace a formal cognitive assessment.
