How to access the tool

DermDiag is an online tool developed by DermNet to help you understand your skin condition. It's intended for educational purposes and doesn't provide medical advice.

By answering a series of questions, and with images to help you along, you're shown a selection of common skin conditions with the characteristics you've chosen. Although the tool doesn't provide clinical guidance, it gives you information that helps you to talk to your doctor and learn more about your skin condition.

Comments: This tool is a very useful way to help identify possible causes of your skin condition. It can be used by health professionals as well the general public. The tool asks a few questions about the affected skin, such as the area affected and the appearance of the affected skin. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and then the tool gives you possible diagnoses. You can click on a potential diagnosis to be directed to the relevant page on the DermNet website, where you can read more about the condition.
The questions are easy to answer (eg, “Is the skin lesion RED?”), and often include photo examples to help you choose the best answer. However, when you're given a list of possible conditions, these could be difficult for non-health trained users to understand as the language is often targeted at health professionals. I also found that the glossary often contained language that may be difficult to understand.
Overall, I found this to be a very high quality tool and would advise using this in conjunction with advice from a healthcare professional (eg, GP or pharmacist) to help with diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions.
