How to get the app |
The Parkinson Exercises app is designed to be used by people with Parkinson’s disease and other forms of Parkinson’s as well as therapists working with patients as a source of advice and instructions for daily exercise and movements. The app is essentially a series of short educational videos (not really ‘exercises’) that describe techniques for improving walking for people with Parkinson’s. The app is designed to improve walking and reduce freezing episodes through personalised exercise videos and cueing strategies.

PROS | CONS |
---|---|
✔ Clear videos with generic but clear advice on how to improve some aspects of gait impairment, some functional transfers and a few range of movement exercises for Parkinson’s. ✔ Includes a lengthy document outlining some options and advice for cardiovascular exercise (‘conditioning’) and relaxation. ✔ Satisfactory for some general advice and a starting point for those wanting more information on how to self-manage. |
✘ The name of the app is misleading. Most of the videos are not of ‘exercises’ but are short educational videos that describe walking techniques. ✘ There are no dose recommendations at all. ✘ Videos are mostly of ‘strategies’ with added advice on how to manage some common problems (freezing, bed mobility, sit to stand). ✘ Advice is very generic and the ‘one size fits all’ approach means it's likely to be relevant to only a subset of people with Parkinson’s (early-to-mid disease stage with mild/moderate gait problems). ✘ As useful as a simple brochure about Parkinson’s although some of the info is out of date. |
Clinical review
Reviewer: Simon Keepa, Physiotherapist
Date of review: May 2025
Platform: Apple
Comments: Very basic app that's more of a library of educational videos, rather than exercises.
Some users may find this useful, but most can probably find these educational snippets with a simple internet search.
Safety concerns: Exercises should be done in a safe environment (eg, clear of obstacles, with stable support nearby) if you're at an increased risk of falling.
New Zealand relevance: Yes
