How to get the app

The NZ Relay app is a communication app for people who are hard of hearing, deaf, deafblind or speech-impaired who want to make and receive phone calls anywhere in Aotearoa New Zealand. Calls made through the app are free. However, the app does use mobile data or an internet connection.

Users can make 2 types of calls through the app:

  • Text relay: This features enables you to text your part of the conversation to a relay assistant, who will speak on your behalf and text you the responses of the other person.
  • Captioned relay: This allows you to speak and listen on a phone call and use the app to read the captions of the other person as they speak to you.
