Mindfulness is the practice of deliberately bringing your attention to something in the present moment. This could be your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, or something in the surrounding environment. As you become more aware of what’s going on for you, you get better at being able to meet your own needs. It also helps you notice other people. You might become more aware of other people’s impact on you or better at noticing other people's experiences, needs and emotions. Because of this, mindfulness is great for helping reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. Being mindful may also support you to adopt healthier choices. Even practicing mindfulness a little bit has been shown to be generally helpful, but the more often you practice, the more helpful it is. Learn more about mindfulness.

Meditation is a mental training technique used to focus the mind, often to achieve clarity, relaxation, or insight. Mindfulness meditation involves paying attention to the present moment.

There are a variety of mobile phone apps for mindfulness and meditation.

Before choosing an app, think about how it will benefit you and what you want it to be able to do.

  • An app will only be helpful if you use it, so it needs to be something you like using and find easy to use.
  • If you find the app difficult to use, or you don't like the imagery or look of it, or the language it uses, you may want to find another one that suits you better.
