How to get the app

The LiverWELL app is designed to be a self-management tool to help you monitor your liver health and keep all your liver health information in one place. The app allows you to set medication reminders and record upcoming medical appointments while keeping a record of past visits. You can also record, track, and graph your liver test results, upload scans and images (eg, radiology), and use the notes function to store personal health information in one place. The app also provides self-care resources relating to diet, physical activity, and general wellbeing.

PROS CONS

Able to add appointments which can be directly added to your phone calendar.

Can keep all your liver-specific health information in one place.

The medication reminder section is not as user friendly as generic medication reminder apps.

At the date of review, the app had a bug and wouldn't allow medications to be added

Section on “News and Events” is mostly not relevant for New Zealanders as it's all Australian based.

There's an option to use the app in some other languages including simplified Chinese, but it appears that only the headings have been translated, and most of the content and forms are in English only.

Comments: I liked the appointment section of this app as you could add in all your upcoming appointments, including information such as location, practitioner, and a notes section (eg, to record questions you might want to ask at your appointment). You can choose to automatically add the appointments from the app directly to your phone calendar and you can also choose to get a reminder notification on your phone.
The results section of the app allows you to record and track some liver-specific blood tests results and your weight, and you can upload images to the “radiology” option in this section. It's relatively easy to view the information, and you can view entries by date or in a graph.
I didn't find the medication section of this app very good; however, I was unable to review this section fully as the app had an error when I tried to add medications. When you add a new medicine, there's a list of pre-populated options you can choose from, however many of these are listed by brand name and many of the medicines and/or brands are not available or funded in New Zealand. I also found the list hard to navigate and it was not immediately obvious that you could scroll down to find more medicines. You can also enter your medicines manually by selecting “Others”. This app does not record your dose or how many tablets to take, unless you decide to add this in the notes section for each medicine. It also wasn’t user friendly to add multiple dose timings (eg, twice a day medications).
There's a small informative section on “Living Well”, which provides some information (in the form of text and videos) on drinking well, eating well, feeling well, and getting active.
The News and Events section is not particularly relevant for New Zealand users as these are all Australian based events and news articles.
There's an option to use the app in some other languages including simplified Chinese, but it appears that only the headings have been translated, and most of the content and forms are in English only.
On the whole, I wasn’t too excited by this app. There was little content that was liver specific (the “results” section for recording lab results, and the information section on “living well). I wouldn't recommend using it as a medication reminder/tracking app, and while the appointments section was good, there will be other apps that are better for recording appointments. I would suggest anyone who wants to manage their liver health or liver condition have a look at the app and see whether the features would be helpful for them.

Safety concerns: None.
New Zealand relevance: Yes the app is relevant to an Aotearoa New Zealand audience, although the contact number for LiverLine is Australia based. The section on “News and Events” is mostly not relevant for New Zealanders as it is all Australian based.
