How to get the app |
Eat Choice is a New Zealand app designed to help you find a restaurant and meal options tailored to your dietary needs. The app is for people who want to eat out while navigating allergies or specific dietary needs. It could also be helpful for people who are organising a group dinner or event and want to ensure a venue is able to meet a range of dietary needs. It offers users a quick way to find places that meet their dietary needs without endless searching.
The app covers gluten-free diets, allergies (dairy-free, nut-free) and many other dietary preferences (eg, vegan, keto, low fodmap). When you register and create a profile you set your preferences and can browse through a selection of restaurants. When you view a restaurant, you can see all the menu options that are suited to your dietary needs. This includes images and pricing. Read more about Eat Choice(external link).
Note: The app currently only covers restaurants in Christchurch and Auckland. As the library of eateries grows it will be relevant to all New Zealanders.

✘ Currently only available for Auckland and Christchurch locations. ✘ Not many eateries but likely to grow over time. ✘ Unlikely to include seasonal menus or specials. ✘ No other allergy free claims are accredited (i.e. nut-free, dairy-free). ✘ No information around the specific guidelines for determining keto, low fodmap, vegetarian meals. |

Comments: This is a useful app making dining out easier for people with specific dietary needs. However, I can’t score it any higher until more eateries and locations around NZ are included on the app. Currently it only covers restaurants in Christchurch and Auckland.
Safety concerns: You still need to take responsibility for the management of your allergy or specific dietary preference and ask the same questions that you normally would when booking and ordering your meal (i.e. to ensure no risk of cross-contamination).
The app does have a pop-up which recommends that you take the usual precautions and confirm dietary needs with the restaurant as you normally would. It's extremely important that this advice is followed to ensure safety and reduce risks. The app has 3 levels under gluten-free so that you can take your own level of risk – these include 'No gluten added', 'Gluten free plus' and 'Gluten free accreditation (Coeliac NZ Dining Out Programme)'
New Zealand relevance: Yes, the app is New Zealand-based but only covers restaurants in Christchurch and Auckland. As the library of eateries grows it will be relevant to all New Zealanders.
