In Aotearoa New Zealand, most dental services for children under the age of 18 years of age are free. Most dental services for adults are not free.

Children and adolescents

In Aotearoa New Zealand, children who meet the eligibility criteria(external link) for publicly funded health and disability services are entitled to free basic oral health services from birth to 17 years of age (until their 18th birthday). Adults

Most dental services are not free. If cost affects whether or not you can see a dentist, ask several dentists about the fees for the treatment you require. There are a limited range of dental services that are funded for adults, find out about publicly funded dental care.(external link)

Accidents and injuries

If you need dental treatment because of an accident or injury, ACC will help with the cost. Your dentist will help you fill out a claim form. Visit the ACC website(external link) to find out more.
